Lizbeth Goodman talks about living in a time of inconvenience

From Ontario to the United Kingdom: Thursday morning at ICE08 kicked off with an address by The Honourable Aileen Carroll, Ontario Minister of Culture, who reminded us that we have a lot to be proud of in Ontario. Currently, the entertainment and creative culture sector in Ontario is the third largest in North America (after New York and California) and the provincial government is making strides to help foster and grow the sector in the years ahead.

Of course, there are interesting and engaging creative innovations happening outside Ontario as well, and Lizbeth Goodman shared some of the projects she’s been involved in over the years during her keynote address. Goodman’s address included video clips of projects and initiatives that have made considerable strides in getting people engaged with the world around them through interactive and immersive environments.

While we are currently living in “a time of inconvenience” — after all, who has the time to check Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and all the other sites every day? — Goodman emphasized that the old model where people engage with networks based on trust is still a good model for content creation. However, we need to choose appropriate communication methods for our messages and objectives: “there’s no use shouting at the back of a deaf child’s head.”

Mark Kuznicki summarized the keynote well in his Twitter update: we need to be more reflective about the media we make, we give, and we sell.
